MICHAEL MAZE - EUROPEAN CHAMPION 2009
Maze vs. Europe 16-0.
Maze won 16 single games in a row.
“This has been the championships of my career. I played the best table tennis in my life in Stuttgart. This is the best Maze ever” says the European Champion Michael Maze.
Maze took the title European Champion after he defeated the Austrian former World Champion, Werner Schlager, in the finale 4-1 after he eliminated the German favorite and defending European Champion, world’s number nr. 3, Timo Boll 4-3 in the semi-finale. Maze also played a fantastic role in Denmark’s journey to the silver in Team’s Event.
When Maze defeated Timo Boll he prevented him from clinching third title in a row. Michael Maze just confirmed his dominance that already was seen in the Team’s Event in Stuttgart. “That is why I am here. That is what makes me want to get out of bed and practice every day – the joy of playing in the final and winning big matches. I enjoy my game. When I was younger I wanted to enter the top 10 in the world rankings, but now big Events are more important. I do not care about rankings, I enjoy playing finals.”
When asking Maze about his goals for the future he replays:” I want to keep improving my game. I want to be much faster. When I play fast, as I did against Timo, it shows how lethal my balls are. So far, I have improved my backhand a lot. I knew I had to do it. Last time when I played against Boll I was sure that I had to work on my backhand if I ever wanted to beat him. The last couple of months I worked every day on that segment of my game.”
In 2004 Maze won the bronze at the Olympic Games in Athens in doubles, he has bronze from the World Championships 2005 and European Championships in 2007. With Denmark, he clinched gold in Aarhus 2005 at the European Championships.
Between glory moments, Michael has had tough times with back injuries. “When I am fully fit and injury free there is no limit for me. I play as good as my body lets me. I have had 16 or 17 months of good training not interrupted by injuries and the result of that is fantastic.”

Congratulation for the fantastic championships in Stuttgart. I saw nearly all of your games live. When I heard that you play in final against W.Schlager, I knew that you win. After you have already win in the Team games (Austria) against W.Schlager. This was also a fantastic match, which I saw live in the "Porsche Arena".
I wish you much continued success.
Congratulations!!!
Surely you played your best table tennis! I am amazed by your sidespin backhand. Incredible. Your ball feeling is unrivaled.

Beating Boll 2 times in a Tournament and leading 3-0 in the semis says enough, you are FAR the best player in Europe.

Thanks a lot for all your nice comments, it means a lot to me. When I arrived to Denmark my family, frieds and press was waiting in the airport it was a bit overwelming:-)
I spend the last couple of days relaxing, seeing friends, talking with the press and having a lot of massage. I can feel on my body that I have been playing a lot of matches lately, so it was nice just to take it easy for some days.
On Friday it time to play the first Champions League of the season. I am really looking forward to this tournament, and think we got a great team. Hope to see you in Roskilde and around. For tickets to Roskilde go to www.billetnet.dk
Do also take a visit to my auction site: www.mazeauction.com I think its quite cool.
Take care and see you soon
Michael
As my favourite player, I enjoy watching your matches more than anyone else's. Your style is so unpredictable and dynamic...and just plain fun! Also, your backhand has come a long way. Every now and then you hit a backhand that just makes my jaw drop to the floor. Whenever I hit a great backhand from midcourt, I like to say "that was almost Michael Mazesque!"
Cheers and I'm sure you'll go on to bigger and better things yet!
